Using the movie Super Size Me to show the connections to the world and math. With a final lab of using estimation to find out what is in a Super Size Me meal from McDonalds.
In this unit we will learning about different stats work. The agenda is below to download click on then pick open with Microsoft Word. If you have been on modified you will stay modified, if you haven't been modified then you need the regular agenda. Be sure to pick up the 5 different hand outs that go with the unit.
To begin the lesson we became and number line and we completed problems together. Then we listened and watched lectures through Kahn Academy - see them below. A worksheet on our own, and then a worksheet with a partner, and finally a review on our own. Wednesday is test day, but if you still are not getting it, maybe this activity can help. Volt Meter click on this activity and play along to see how negative and positive numbers work. Remember you can re-take the test as many times as you need to get a good grade
Writing Numbers and Place Value
We are moving on to place value and writing numbers, along with rounding, estimating, and truncating these numbers. We will watch the following videos on our own, and then complete a worksheet on Place Value and writing numbers. Then as a class we will lecture on Rounding, Estimating, and Truncating. The Place Value Videos are below, and after lecture I will add the R/E/T videos. Wednesday is worksheets on Place Value, Thursday is quiz on Place Value and worksheets on R/E/T, Friday is quiz on Rounding, Estimating, and Truncating. We will not be taking an test on Friday as planned earlier instead we will take that test on TUESDAY - homework over the weekend will be to complete the Review sheets for Place Value, Rounding, Estimating, and Truncating.
Factoring of Numbers and Exponents - 9/6
For the week of Sept 6th we will be working on Factoring and Exponents along with Greatest Common Factor, Prime Factorization, and Least Common Multiple. Students were given an assignment sheet for the Unit that states what the assignments are and when they are due. The Holt book can be viewed on my website under Applied Math book and the lectures for the Unit can be viewed below or by opening the lecture document.
The fractions unit will begin with simplifying fractions and comparing fractions. Then we will dive into adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing of fractions. We will work with irrational, rational, and mixed numbers. Students will watch lectures and complete book pages. The test will cover all the areas and quizzes will be given daily to see how students are doing.
The students will be learning how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply decimals. They will then learn how to convert fractions to decimals, decimals to fractions, decimals to percentages, percentages to fractions and decimals. Then they will learn about proportions and ratios and how to solve proportions. The test will be on the first Monday of October. The students will use Kahn Academy to find the lectures that are listed in the Agenda. I will also post the links to the lectures on this website, but I will not be putting the videos on the site. I will do one lecture in class and that will be posted to the website on that day.
This unit will continue what we learned in the last unit. We will now use percentages in word problems and with real world problems. Students will take a word problem test on percents and using the percent in problems they will face everyday in life.
