Go the following website "FIVE HABITS OF A CRITICAL THINKER" (click on the link). Read the article. Identify the skill you think is the most important. Then reflect on the list of five in regards to your own thinking. Do you practice critical thinking? Do you think that there should be other habits on this list of 5? Which trait do you think is the hardest to do? Which trait do you think is the easiest to do? Why? Give some real thought and reflection.
Then read other students reflections and respond to one that you agree with and one you disagree with and explain why you agree/disagree with them.

In the article, I think “Trust and Verify” is the most important. If you always think that everything you hear, read, or see is correct then everybody may think the wrong is right. For example: you see a robber in a movie and his side of the story was that he needed the objects he took, you may think, if you were a young child, that stealing is okay when it isn’t. I do, for the most part, practice critical thinking everyday, I admit when I don’t know about something. I find what interests me, I look at everybody’s point of view when nesseccary, I find out the truth and don’t just go along with what I hear. I can’t think of another habit that should be on the list of five. I think the hardest trait to do that is on the list of five, would be looking to understand everybody’s point of view on a matter. Some people just look at half the story and go off that, they don’t always look into it to see what actually happened or why that person or the other feels the way they do.

Cecilia I agree with you about Trust and Verify being the most important because you cant just beleive everything your told because some of it isnt true. I also agree with how hard it is to understand other people's points of view.

C.C. I agree with how you said that. I mean to a small child that is a good thing to learn. But once you are old enough to make your own decisions and to tell wither if its right or wrong will get harder. So I think it is a hard one to a degree.

C.C. i disagree with you about this trust can lead to a lot of problems so the verify can lead to problems if you just look info up on the internet can lead to these problems. I'm not against trust but I'm saying be careful with who you trust and how you verify your information.
DK

I think that trust and verify is the most important because you have to be able to discern what is correct and what is incorrect. You cant just say that what ever you here, read, or see is correct. Just because you saw on the internet does not mean it is true you have to be able to discern what is real and what is fake.

I think that the “you don’t know something, admit it” is most important because I think that when you don’t ask questions on something that your struggling on then you wont understand it as good as you could. I think that critical thinking is very important and I try to do it as much as I can. I don’t really think that there should be any other habits other then those five. I think that understanding other peoples’ point of view is the hardest because when you always believe in your own thoughts then its going to be very hard for you to try and think like somebody else does, for example if you had your mind set on one thing you wouldn’t understand someone else’s opinion if you already made your mind up. I think that everyone should try and use critical thinking everyday because there would be fewer debates and you could understand things more then you first did.

Maddie, Ms. Fry, I agree with you. If you don't admit to being wrong then you will not understand something that you were wrong about. And the other people’s points of view is also important, if you only listen to one perspective like your own, then you won’t learn about how other people think we should live or even find a better perspective than your own.

I defiantly agree with you Maddie! You have to admit when you are wrong even if you don’t want to. Then when you do admit it you can get what is right which will most likely help you in the future. You also when you do know you are wrong you get that answer double checked.

I agree with you , that “ If you don’t know something admit it” is the most important and I loved how you summed it up Maddie by saying “when you don’t ask questions on something that your struggling on then you won’t understand it as well as you could”.

In the article that I read from the link I think that ‘Always Remember the Importance of Critical Thinking as it Relates to Your Education’ for several reasons. If you think about critical thinking doesn’t just happen sometime, you have to have critical thinking everywhere. Once you practice critical think the efforts will eventually pay off towards what you want. I have to practice critical thinking its not a question you will have to sooner or later, and I would pick sooner. Personally I don’t think there should be any more on the list of five because thoughs really hammer down what the article is about. I think the hardest one of all is seeking to understand other people’s point of view by far. If you’re a really opinionated person this would be really hard for you because your not used to supporting someones opinon if you don’t agree with it. This would probely be the hardest for me because I am super opionated I will speak what I feel. But I do need to get over that because sometimes supporting someone elses opioion can be good.

Ally, I too read the article from the link that Mrs. Miller assigned to us for our DQ on her website that is due on Friday at midnight, I agree. Critical thinking is not something that just comes naturally, you have to just use critical thinking in all types of situations. And we will have to eventually do it sometime in our lives, so why not now right?

I think that admitting that you don't know something it's the hardest and most important. It is the hardest because no one wants to admit that they don't know what to do especially when your the person that tends to understand everything. It's the most important because you need to know when to ask for help because if you don't you will probably end up doing it wrong because you didn't bother asking. There should be others because I believe there is a ton of ways to be a critical thinker other than just these such as thinking hard about situations you are in no madder what it is and think about how to fix it or how to get what you want. I also think another hard one is trust and verify because we tend nowadays to believe everything we see and hear witch causes a problem because a lot of things on the Internet and in papers aren't true

Emily, I disagree with you that admitting what you don't know is the most important. You do have some very good points though, which right now I am practicing the third one, I am seeking to understand your points of view, but I do not believe that admitting what you don't kinow is the most important.

I think that the most important skill is “trust and verify”. I think I practice critical thinking because I try to learn new things and like to learn. I know which issues I am touchy on and why. Sometimes though, I don’t try to understand other peoples’ points of view. I do however have a good balance between being skeptical and not believing anything. I try to remember to be clear headed.

I think Trust and Verify is the most important because people need to be capable to trust what ever or who ever you are working with. It is also good to double check your own work that way anyone working with you can trust you to. I think that the world would be better if everyone could just trust everyone around them. I mean if everyone verified there problems there would be less crime and stuff like that.

The skill I think is the most important is being able to understand other people’s points of view. I think it is really important to be well rounded. On the first regard I think it’s important to know and admit that you don’t know something. I also think that it is important that you do learn about the subject that you don’t know about. The second endeavor is also important that you know the certain subjects that you have strong feelings for. The third point of view is the one I mentioned earlier where I believe that people should be open minded and well rounded. The fourth I think I do quite a bit is truth and verify. I listen to others and then check and make sure that the information is valid. The last skill is to keep remembering the importance of critical thinking throughout your education. I think I do practice critical thinking when I feel the need to other wise I am very free minded. I always make a point to listen to other opinions though. I think the article covered most of the basic critical thoughts that people should practice.

I like this article. I think the skill that is most important to me is skill number 3. Last year in Civics with Mr. Crossfield, we had a lot of discussions on different issues such as abortion or gay marriage. I think the thing our class had the most trouble on this skill because even though you should do it it’s still one of the hardest things to do and everyone was just kind of set on their opinion and wouldn’t listen and take in what other people’s points of view were. I think all five skills are still important, but I think that this one was my favorite. When discussing different issues, I think I use some of these skills or try to at least. I like this article because it reminded me I should probably always remember to use these skills.
Aidan

Ireland, I agree with you that the third skill is the most important. It is kind of hard sometimes to do this skill, but when you actually do the skill, it helps a lot and might just change your own mind. I like how you used the example of Civics class.

I agree with you Ireland taking more than one point of view is important. Otherwise you only have half the story and then the story is not fulfilled. Life is a book and critical thinking is only one part of this book seeing the other sides of the story is the best way to understand it.

I think that “Seek to understand peoples’ points of view” is the most important. I think that this is the most important because you can’t just go along thinking that you are right and there is no way that anyone else could be right. Everyone has their own opinions and it would kind of be ignorant to not “Seek to understand peoples’ points of view”. The others are important too but not as important as “Seek to understand people’s points of view”, I think that “Trust and verify is important too because you shouldn’t go along believing rumors about people because there are a lot of rumors, especially in Pomeroy. It’s kind of like the saying “Believe half of what you see, and a quarter of what you hear.” I think that the hardest thing to do is to admit if you don’t know something because you might be afraid of what others think of you and you may want to seem smarter than you actually are.
Zoe

I disagree with you that the third skill, seek to understand other peoples points of view is the most important yes it is important, but, you should also be opinionated on topics and not just stick to whatever people tell you to think and you can always do research on your own without the help of others.

I think number one is pretty important. If you can’t admit to being wrong then you can’t accomplish much. Another good one is number 3. Even if you don’t agree with someone you should still listen to their point of view. It could change yours slightly if they have good reasoning. Number 4 is great too. Going around believing everything you read or hear is not the best way to go. Believing all that does not create a personal input for you. If you don’t have an opinion, people won’t take you seriously. So I would say my top 3 on that list are 1, 3, and 4. The other 2 are good, but those 3 are pretty strait forward and make a good point. The hardest one to do is number 5 in my opinion because it’s easy to jump to conclusions when you are not thinking critically.
Zoe

I think the skill that is most important is number three. Number one skill “ If you don’t know something, admit it” is also a very important skill to have to be a critical thinker because, you have to admit your wrong to eventually be right otherwise, you will never be able to admit your wrong and so you will always be wrong. Number two skill “Acknowledge your ‘hot buttons’” is very important because, if you don’t notice how you react to certain topics otherwise you can get really emotional and learn nothing new on that certain topic. Number three skill “Seek to understand other peoples’ points of view” is a skill you need for critical thinking because, if you don’t understand where someone is coming from you will never understand their thoughts and ideas. Skill number “’Trust and verify’” is very considerable to critical thinking because, if you trust unreliable sources you will have all the wrong information and it will just get harder to get the correct information. Skill number five “Always remember the importance of critical thinking as it relates to your education” is critical because without it you won’t be able to use any of the other skills because, you won’t remember how important thinking like that is. I think I practice critical thinking because, I naturally want as much information as I can get so I do admit when I’m wrong so I can be right, and I know which topics I am very opinionated about and try to keep my voice and attitude in check, I do try to understand where other people thoughts and feelings are coming from and will ask them questions so I understand more about that certain topic, probably them, and if they are a reliable source of information. Yes I think there should also be another skill I think that in order to be a critical thinker you need to be willing to research about things your curious about. I think the hardest trait that is hardest to do is number two acknowledging your hot buttons because, it’s hard to realize when you are that emotional about a topic and to keep everything you react to in check.
Gregory
10/5/2012 02:49:26 pm
I think that Acknowledging your "hot buttons" is the most important because then you can better understand yourself then go on to understand others. This was a tough choice for me because they all are an important part of critical thinking. I be leave everyone has thought critically at some time they just don't remember that experience. With only those five habits anyone can think critically. The hardest trait is to understand other peoples point of view. You are your own person and usually don't know what another person is thinking. But with empathy you can think critically with ease. In the article I think that Acknowledge your “hot spots” if you don’t then there will be some trouble down the way for you. In the others I think that yes we should know and admit it that we don’t have a clue what people are saying. I know that we don’t want to admit it because than people will think that we are stupid and not hang with us any more. But I say is admit it and then go and find out about it. Then the next time someone says anything about that subjects then you will have an answer for him or her. For number 4 “Trust and verify.” Is correct, if you just blindly accept what you hear or read than you will never learn any thing. You need to trust your self to say that isn’t true just because I read it online. If you don’t understand what other people are saying or views than try and find out it will be good for you and that person. So the person doesn’t have to explain everything to you.

I read a article on five very important critical habits for typing. I would have to say that the hardest skill by far is "if you don't know something, admit it", because realizing you don't understand something is hard enough, but to actually admit to it and get help with it is even harder. I also think that is the most important skill because i know a lot of people struggle with that critical habit. I also think that there should be another critical skill. That skill is keeping a good attitude. I know for a fact that if i am mad or frustrated that i always do worse, rather than having a good attitude and stay positive. Just keep thinking to your self with every lesson or assignment you struggle with that you can do it if you seriously put your mind to it! Also if you try your best to attempt all of the critical habits you should be very successful.
AdreAnna

In the article I think that "If you don't know something admit it" is the most important because, it's better to admit you don't know something even if you think it is embarrassing rather than to fail. I think something that should be added to the critical thinking is being honest. Without honesty the world be like a lie free zone. I also think that giving an effort in your work should be added. I think you should just do your best so you can avoid detention because, if you don't do your work then your gonna have to face the punishments. I think the hardest trait would be "trust and verify" because, almost every one believes every thing they read on the internet or are told. Comments are closed.
