Search the Internet for a scholastic article discussing the opportunities and challenges around technology use by adolescents. Create a link to your article. Then summarize your article for everyone. After your summary explain your personal opinion about technology use in school and home, and the opportunities it provides you along with the challenges that are faced.
Respond to two other students about their article first (after you have read it) and then their personal opinion regarding technology. It is good to disagree, but remember what we say can be misunderstood on the Internet, so pick your words carefully.
My article about scholastitic technology for adolescents is that the opportunities for technology are we can use it for educational learning. We can also use it for songs during class if the teacher says it is okay. Now the challenges for using technology in school is that students can video a beating of a teacher. Or they can cheat on tests if the teachers aren’t looking. Like in my article a student waited until after school for a teacher and then when the teacher came out of their classroom the student that was suspended for using bad language blindsided her in the hallway with a vicious punch the teacher had to have 25 stitches in her head. While his buddy recorded it on his cell. They both were tried as adults and went to the “big boy” jail. One bail was set at $250,000 and the other was set at $100,000.

Hannah I agree with you about the use of technology for educational learning, but in school I think that students should not have access to WI-FI for personal use like you said.

Hannah, I agree with you that we should use the technology we have to make our education better. I don't agree with you on the fact that we should be able to use our phones, with or without Wi-Fi. I think that using our phones will be a distraction and Dylan made a good point when he said that students will use their phones when they aren't allowed to.

Hannah, wow that makes a lot of since and I totally agree with what you said! I understand that technology can really take over our lives but it also helps us. Now what those two guys did what jerks! I believe that we should be allowed to use it but in moderation and permission.

Hannah it is true that we should not be able to use wifi durning school but even when the wifi is locked people can find out the password and not just get online with cellphones but also with iPods and such in classes that teacher allow that

Hannah,
The article I read about technology in schools said that students for the most part were all for more technology in schools saying that it could help them learn. Other students however said that many other students used the internet to cheat on assingments. Teachers were wary of using the internet more because it meant that they would have to work more finding out what websites were safe to use and what sites werent safe.

This article talks about how fast technology has grown and taken over teens. The internet and cell phones have become the new rhythm of their lives. They do not talk as much, as they prefer to text or IM. Technology has become a way of expressing their self. It has made things much simpler and teens do not have to type on a typewriter or write a letter.

Havin I agree with you about how teens text each other more than talk. And about how cell phones are good if you dont have home phones. I also agree about how cyber bullying has become a serious problem.

Havin, I agree with what you said. Cyberbullying is a very serious subject and it happens all of the time on the internet. Yes, texting is great for teens because that is a great way to communicate with your peers without actually having to hang out with them. I don't however agree with letting students use their phones in class because it is a huge distraction.

Havin, I agree with some of what you said but not al. I agree that technology has defiantly grown fast and is a big help to teens. Also it is very fun to be on and the ability to chat with your friends. I don’t agree that we should be allowed to use of phones in school, lunches sure but not classes. Too many people can be bullied more and could help people cheat on tests easier.

Ally I agree, but the schools should not ruin it for the other kids that are doing well with their phones and ipods. I mean, just because a few kids are doing wrong with what they are given does not mean everyone else is.

Havin, I agree with you about how it can defiantly be misused and that can not be overlooked but, I also think it’s okay for someone to have a cell phone and use it to text to stay in touch with friends that you cant talk to at the moment but need or want to I do think it is ridiculous that people will text next to each other but will not talk.

Schools all over the world are waging a war of technology tools gone badly. While administrators, parents, and politicians battle over what with their kids are doing with their electronics, kids out there are doing just about anything they can do on their phones from inappropriate stuff to just take pictures with friends. In the article I read school are knocking out policies that range from total “abstinence” to total immersion. Whatever the device they are using could be for better or for worse. Adults simply don’t know exactly what to do appropriate digital behavior. Anything the student or kids could be doing can happen during class time or school time which in this case we don’t want.

Maddie I agree children are prone to getting in trouble with technology that's why Mr. lamunyan and the school board take precautions with the internet such as blocking sites that distract kids from schoolwork. This generation of children likes to pull funny pranks with technology that's why new technologies need to be as controlled by reasonable adults such as the school board. I, Ireland h. Mayfield , chose the article titled "in the classroom of future" from the New York Times website. It talks about kids at the Kyrene School District using technology in their classroom. They are learning about shakespeare, and the technology is helping them a lot! I think that without technology in our school, I would have a lot more trouble on assignments that involve research. Technology can also be helping us for in the future. My mom told me the most jobs now, you would probably want some experience in technology. She is an accountant so she works a lot with computers. She sometimes helps me understand things like exel or PowerPoint. She had to learn a lot about technology to help her with her job, because they didn't use much technology when she was in high school. I think that it helps to have technology in school.

Lexi I agree that the internet can be distracting to students during school some kids will have the page they are supposed to having up then they will have another tab on something completely different on that other tab. Some people just need to learn to quite using the internet and learn how to read a book. But however the internet is useful in so many ways that people prefer it over a book.

I read a article from http://www.scholastic.com, it was a article about how cell phone uses could go wrong and how technology is just not suited for school. In the article i read it stated that alot of schools are totally getting rid of cell phone uses. Some of the reasons being is that kids abuse their privillages. Some people were taking inappropriate pictures, getting distracted in class, and cheating. Adults have no clue what to do digital behavior.

I agree with everything you said Ashley I agree that, technology such as phones, computers, and ipods are all very useful but, there are negatives also such as you said viruses and cyber bullying. I also think that there shouldn’t be any phones in class just like you said but where the kids use phones outside of class I believe should be up to them.

I found an article on how cell phones affect the classroom from the teachers point of view. For a teacher a cell phone is really distracting in the class. They are always enforcing the rules and have to work their day around these issues. They have to be able to keep a consistent consequence for being a disturbance to the class. Teachers also have to also deal with cyber bullying. That is a big issue with students because it can travel across an entire school very quickly. Bullying deals with a lot of drama and hurts a lot of students. It hurts the students who are being bullied, their friends, and probably the bully themselves. The teachers have to take the time to find and deal with these media problems. Teachers also have to deal with avoiding having favorites with students. They have to be very aware to keep every punishment fair when it comes to the cell phones during class. I also found a saying that states, “If it goes off, it goes right to me(teacher)” Some of the benefits of having a cell phone using them in class is having the students summarize what they learned with texting. There have also been lots of teachers who assign their assignments using their phones.

I think that internet is a good thing for school but that is to a point. I think that it is a good because students and teachers because we need it to looke up grades sporting events and to do homework. I think its a bad thing because students and maby even teachers good looke stuff up that is not school realated.

I think that ipods and phones should have to be more of a at home thing. Or possibly left in lockers so that way kids are not texting in class or listening to their music, rather than their teachers. Yes I like to listen to music while I work, but it does get in the way sometimes. Technology is a great thing to have in school but it is also a big responsibility for everyone. Not just for the students but for the teachers as well.

My article was on an interview with two people and their views on technology in schools, mostly with computers. One guy was Ian Jukes and the other was Alan Warhaftig, they were both administrators once and in the interview share their opinions on computers in the classroom. Both of their statements stated that computers shouldn’t be used as often as they are in classrooms and we shouldn’t have teachers teach how to use a computer as much as we teach the actual curriculum.

Obviously technology is a huge part of the world and tons of people use it. It helps us in so many ways. Contacting each other, researching, and even your job can be done with computers. You have to admit, life is easier with technology. Imagine going through books and encyclopedias to get information for a report or hand writing out a report. But it gets to a point to where it gets a little out of hand. The article I read was talking about a teenager is said they’d rather give up a kidney than their phone. Some people feel that their life revolves around their cell phone or computer. The things people put on the internet may not be appropriate either. So at school it’s good to put a firewall on websites so students aren’t getting into things they shouldn’t be.

Whoops! Forgot the link to my article My article was mostly numbers and percentages but it talked about how more teens are using cell phones and the internet. Also the different ways of communicating and the way most teens communicate with technology. At the bottom of article there is a data table that shows what teens do online. In this article there wasn’t a lot of a opinion, but based on the teens the in 9th grade the numbers can’t be to far off. I use the internet a lot For TV, games, and school. In my opinion technology and the internet are not all bad but there are hazards like what we learned about in class.

http://www.edweek.org/ew/issues/technology-in-education/ I read an article on technology used by teens that I found interesting. The way schools handle how teens use their electronics is their main goal. Parents, administrators, and politicians battle over what teens should be able to do on the electronics. In a school in Alabama there were 2 boys who videotaped an assault on a teacher, one of the boys had been suspended for obscene language. They two set up cameras in the hallway waiting for the class to end. The suspended boy had punched the teacher and she had to get 25 stitches, the school does have a cell phone policy that nobody should have it during school but some kids don’t listen. The two boys ended up going to jail and charged as men. Another cell phone incident this year, a teacher left the classroom for a few minutes, leaving her ninth-grade class unattended, and a scuffle broke out and a student recorded it and posted it on you-tube. Nobody was hurt but it was still a serious issue, the school now faces bigger problems than just you-tube coverage. In one other school a woman was faced with the possibility of 40 years in jail, she had students in her care have pop-up ads of not-school-appropriate subjects. She was a substitute that day and didn’t report the incident. The school now has a filter on their computers so students can not see stuff they shouldn’t. Cell phones have taken sexual harassment to a level that is too far, I believe that cell phones should be turned off during school time and kept out of reach unless given permission for use. Some students in other schools use the Internet on iPods, MP3s, ect. to cheat on schoolwork, I also think that all electronics shouldn’t be in a place where you need to learn life skills that you will actually use.
