Leadership Activities
Professional organizations (and likewise student organizations) are invaluable for people with similar careers and interests. Investigate at least one professional organization on the first web site. Then investigate a web site from the list of student organizations. (Your teacher may provide you with additional sites of student organizations.) Then answer the questions. Question 1: What is the value of belonging to a professional organization? Is the reason for joining similar to the value of becoming a member in a student organization? Why or why not? Site specific examples in your answer. Question 2: What are some of the services provided by both student and professional organizations? What specific professional development opportunities are available? Initial response ALWAYS 150 - 200 words and the reply to other students needs to be meaningful and substantial. The value of belonging to a professional organization is invaluable as it said in the leadership activities paragraph. This is because you can talk to or ask questions to people that have similar careers or interests. Yes it is because on both pages it says that if you join them then you will be involved in all sorts of cool stuff, like for a professional organization some stuff is, flexible options that fit you, programs to help you take advantage of your career, etc. For a student organization it is stuff like joining special groups to learn or getting special tutoring. It also says that it will help you in the future. With professional organizations they say if you join this then you will get certain benefits or help in the future. For a student organization it is stuff like helping you make a difference in the future or getting success thorough education.

Hogan, although you were very vague in your first question response I still think your reply is good. You had some good examples but you could have been more specific like you were in your second question reply. I thought that your second reply was great because you stated the websites such as ACM and FFA along with some good examples that were similar to mine because I also used FFA. Your statements were very precise and to me it seems you did a great job on your research to find all of these great examples.

what did you mean by " it because on both pages it says that if you join them then you will be involved in all sorts of cool stuff, like for a professional organization some stuff is" could you please be more clear on what you meant.

The value of belonging to a professional career is that you know everything about your job and you can help others learn and persuade them into jumping into it. Also most of these professional careers give you lots of amazing perks by joining them. Joining one of these professional organizations is similar to the value of becoming a member of student organizations because you’re joining a club/career that you care about and would like to do and learn and do more with it. In both professional and student organizations they will teach you about how the job works and what you will be doing.

The value of belonging to a professional organization is to help you and others people grow in specific fields of interest. I think the reason for joining a professional organization can be similar to the value of becoming a member in a student organization depending on what the student and professional organizations are. For example, if I join the Association for Computing Machinery, ACM and am in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) then they are probably for different reasons since one has to do with computers and the other has to do with Business.

Spencer, I agree with your statement on professional development opportunities. This is similar to what I wrote because I noticed this on the websites that I was exploring (The State Bar of California and FFA). On the other hand I don’t agree with your reasoning’s being completely different for joining ACM and FBLA because in business you use computers all of the time. All in all though I think your response is great.

The benefits of joining a professional organization have a lot of value to your profession because it allows you to network with others with similar careers and interest. Many organizations have websites that are packed with all sorts of information in your particular field or career. For example, The State Bar of California has a website that has many useful things on it for a person in the Law profession. This website has news articles, events, and even job opportunities. The reason for joining a professional organization seems as though it would be similar in value as joining a student organization. I believe this because the student organization websites such as FFA offer similar benefits such as events, resources, and even leadership opportunities.

Devon, I agree with all of your post. It is familiar to my post. I agree with the statement” FFA offer similar benefits such as events, resources, and even leadership opportunities.” This is also very familiar to what I posted. But I agree with this because the FFA ,and other organizations alike, offer many opportunities for you to learn new things. These things can be completely irrelevant to what you want to do, but they still give you experience, the FFA and others alike it can help you as an individual in your future and present times.

According to the research I have done, there are a lot of benefits from both ends, professional and personal. If you were to be a member of a club, let’s use ACS ( American Chemical Society), you would have the benefits of all around accessibility. The websites for these clubs have things exclusively for members of the club. This would give them access to additional information on the topic in which they choose. This club also gives out discounts on books and such. Just for being a member. You can also get access to other websites they have set up for the members. They have all sorts of extra info. Personally, this would give you a huge benefit. The benefit of knowledge, for this club especially. This place gives you lots of information from the community, all which can be useful or completely useless. It is still knowledge nonetheless. I went to http://www.acs.org/ to find all of this. I think that a club would be very helpful for you. Especially if it peaks your interest.

Chance, thank you for your kind reply on my response. Anyway I also agree with your response because you used some of the same websites I used such as FFA. After reading your post I can tell you have done lots of research and your research is very accurate too. In reading your post I thought it was very good and i agree with your statements about FFA and ACS they are accurate and you have researched well.

Chance, you stated that that by participating in FFA you can get more opportunities in other potential programs. I agree with that because in any program you participate in, you always have other potential programs that you can try if you’re willing to. Also I thought that you did a very good job because your information was all correct and explained well.

Belonging to a professional organization helps establish legitimacy when you're first starting out in the field. This is especially true for freelancers and independent contractors because you're lacking the professional cover of a well-known company name or employer. Being a member of a professional organization carries a degree of respectability when applying for jobs or presenting credentials to potential clients. Another benefit in belonging to a professional organization includes networking. Attending events or functions in a professional organization related to your field will help you get to know colleagues better, interact with competitors and build relationships with potential mentors. At events or online, you'll be able to chat about current trends, innovations and upcoming trainings. Many professional organizations help their members find jobs, or at the least, offer up job listings that other members may be offering. I think the reason for joining is different because you could join because you feel like you need to participate in an activity when you’re a student but when you’re older you might join because you want to interact with your community or have something to do on your free time. Some services provided by student and professional organizations are colleges and universities. A lot of professional opportunities that are available are teachers.

Stacy I agree with you, especially when you said and I quote “Helps establish legitimacy when you’re first starting out in the field.” I agree on that because it will apply to your technique, experience in your career pathway, and life experience in that business. Also benefit to presenting in front of loads of people as well. Just remember it is like presenting in front of your class.

The value of belonging to a professional career is that you know can learn and know everything about your job. The good thing about it is that you can grow in whatever career you need to grow in. Professional jobs can be the same as joining student organizations like FFA and FBLA. In these clubs you get to explore the job career you want to explore. You can ask your FFA or FBLA advisor questions about your career path that you have chosen. You can also reaserch these things in your class such as careers . The reason why someone would join an organization or a profession career would be to learn about a career path they wanted or to have a job that they have always wanted to have or to simply make money for their family or for their bills. That is why someone would join a student organization or a professional career path.

Kyson, I was unclear with your description of the values of belonging to a professional organization and student organizations. You only told some of the values of being in a professional organization. I did not see you mention anything about the values of being in a student organization. With that being said I thought the rest of your response was much better, because it was more clear and concise.

Hogan I agree with your statement about student organizations and professional careers. I like how your talked about how you can a ask someone about the career path that your want to go into. I also like that you said that if you join a professional organization that you will get perks and that the perk with student organization is that your get to learn about what career path your want to go into that is why I agree with you.

Devon I agree with you because you said that the benefits of joining a professional organization have a lot of value to your profession because it lets you network with other careers and interests I think that is very true when it comes to organizations and networking. Another thing I agree with you about is that you said that many organization websites are packed full with information about your career that you are attending or want to attend. If you get on an organization website you can find all those thing you are looking for.

Kris, I did not understand what you meant when you said, "Yes because on both pages it says that if you join them then you will be involved in all sorts of cool stuff like for a professional organization some stuff is, flexible options that fit you. You did not list any of the cool stuff you would be involved in. You also did not tell us about any of the flexible options that fit you.

Professional organizations help people learn about certain jobs or practice certain skills. They also serve as a place for people with similar interests and skills to meet. This means it is a great way to pursue a job you are interested in. A student organization is run by students at a school or university. The organization usually only contains students and are used to promote a belief or run an activity. You would become a member of a professional organization to pursue an occupation, and you would join a student organization to have fun with people who share your interests.

Question 1: One of the many values of being in a professional organization is that you can learn many valuable things from doing it. Also, it looks good on college applications, and job applications. The reason for joining either type of organizations is very similar. Both of them are to learn more about the occupation you are considering entering as an adult. For example, if you were in FFA then you would learn more about jobs in agriculture. You would also gain very valuable skills you would need to use as a person involved in a job with agriculture.

You get good benefits and knowledge of what’s going to happen before it does. You also get experience in what ever it is you’re doing, whether it is business or operating on someone’s brain, any experiences you can get take it. You can make new friends and maybe whatever it you’re doing is really important. Yes, I believe the reasons are very similar. I think they are similar because in both professional societies you have a commitment to your job or duty and the organizations might be about similar thing. You might have gone into one organization because of the other organization. The one organization might be the running start for the other.
