Putting Off Procrastination- read the article.
On the seven skills listed rated yourself between 1-5 with 5 being the best and 1 worst. Then state how you intend to improve those skills. Then search the web for an article regarding procrastination or time management for high school students. Summarize your article in 3-5 sentences and provide the link to the article. Finally - you will be given two students names in class on Tuesday, tell them how they can improve on one of their procrastination skills listed in the article. Remember constructive criticism is not intended to hurt, but instead to help. If you are rude in your post it will be deleted and zero given for this weeks DQ. For your post to another student make sure it is in response to someone who posted constructive criticism to you. Your post should include why or why not you think that suggestion work for you. **** Some of you need to watch your spelling and punctuation in your blogs - double check you have capitalized I before you post. Personally think for procrastination I have a 1 I'm the worst at forgetting things and/or putting them off I believe to make myself better I will start doing homework before anything else so I don't get distracted. In my article it says to try to get rid of distractions like cellphones, facebook and other networking sites, being online in general, this is good because distractions are most likely why people procrastinate. Working for a box of time helps also next you can get a BHAG or a big, hairy, audacious goal audacious means willingness you take big risks and that should excite you if you get it done. Setting priories is a big one to school should be over friends even if you want them to be higher they're not also you should sell the benefits to your self like if i get this done I can have one assignment off the list of ones I need to do. Maddie I"m not really sure if you procrastinate a lot but i do know you do enjoy texting and talking to friends and as I said before I don't really know if you procrastinate a lot but if your friends are getting in the way of your school work then have your mom or a higher authority in your house hold on to your phone and ask them not to give back to you until your homework is done or whatever you need to be doing. Ashley once again i don't know if you procrastinate either but I do know you have A TON of friends and you enjoy Facebook too. If you really need to then you should just tell your friends you can't talk until your homework is done and try to stay off the computer while your doing homework because those are really good distractions from doing what your suppose to be doing i know I have that problem really badly you should also because you have a sister go into a quiet room to do home work so she can't distract you

Emily, I think that I deserve a 2 because I procrastinate quite a bit, but not always. I don't wait until the day it's due to do my homework, but I do it the night before it is due usually, not during the day. When I am assigned to read a book, I usually wait until the last two or three days to read it. I can improve it by doing my work right when I get home the day I get it. The two people I drew were Teresa and C.c. I am not completely sure about Teresa but I think that Teresa is actually pretty good about procrastination. C.c. is usually pretty good from what I've seen with procrastination. As you can see on the DQ, C.c. got it done on the 16th, which was the very first DQ to be posted. Pretty much, I believe that C.c. and Teresa are way better with procrastination than I am.

Aidan, think you can improve you procrastination by just doing things when you first get it. It will make things a lot easier to not wait until the day it’s due. I don’t think that you should have rated yourself a 2 though, you do get your stuff done on time, your DQ wasn’t done at the last minute, and from what I’ve seen in class, you get most of your homework turned in the day it should be.
I would rate myself as a 3 after reading that article. My reasoning on that is I tell others about my plan and we figure out what to do about that plan. I am also good at spelling out my specific goals and thoughts. And finely on the good things is I am good at bringing my excuses to light. And I look at my progress and see what my time frame is. However I do not keep the momentum going most of the time. And I watch the clock all the time and I never set an alarm clock and I can be bad at staying on schedule.

Pearl I think that I would be a 2 because I usually get my work done and turned in on time but I usually wait till last minute to do it. I could improve on my procrastination by doing assignment when I first get home so I won be up all night working on them. Also if I don’t do the assignment I should still work on it and turn it in when I’m done so I avoid having a missing assignment or so I can get my grade up. The article I read about procrastination was explaining how there are two types of procrastination one is where you put off work till last minute and the other is when you put off the work for so long that you just don’t do it. It also explained what kind of stress it caused you. If you procrastinate some things it can cause you a lot of stress and it may even cause you to break down. Also procrastination affects a lot of teens and if teens get in the habit of procrastination know it will usually stick with them. The two names that I drew were Ally and Alexis. I will start with Ally and please correct me if I’m wrong but I think that Ally could improve on her procrastination skills by asking people to remind her of her homework other than that I think that Ally is okay on procrastination. Lastly Alexis, I honestly don’t think that you procrastinate that much because I have been with you many times and you always get your work done and you usually do it right when you come home, but if there was one thing I think you could improve on it would be keeping your motivation up other than that you’re good!

Thank you so much Maddie! I think that you are kind of right I do my homework when I get home if it is due on the next day. I need to work on the longer assignments when I have more time to do them. I do my work right when I get home because it just gets out of the way faster,

To start off I think this is incredibly ironic this DQ is about procrastination because I’m doing this on a Thursday night and there are only seven comments. Anyhow, I’d say I’m about a 2 on procrastination. I usually try and get things done (such as homework) right when I get home, but then I’m like ‘Nah, I’d rather watch a Say Yes to the Dress marathon.’ It’s good to make mental lists (or a for real written down one) of everything you have to do and check it off as you get them done. Motivation is key. Personally, I think of how good it will feel to be done with everything done. Sometimes when I’m running cross country I make that mental list of things I need to get done, and when I get home I’m like ‘Let’s get this done!’ This year I’m trying to get things done ASAP and not think ‘I have another day to do this.’ because I’ll probably just end up doing it at the last minute or maybe even forgetting.

Teresa,
Of the list I am probably a 3. If I am motivated it usually lasts quite a while and I can get lots done but if the momentum wears off then I have a hard time getting going again. I could improve by assessing my progress. I usually look at how much more I have to do. That can get very discouraging.

Out of the list given i am probably a three. I do not have a schedule so most of the time i don't get things done when I need to. Now thinking about it would probably be a good thing if i did. I'm also not good at assessing my problems along the way, i try to hide my problems from the world. I have realized lately that talking about your problems with a friend really helps. I intend on improving these skills by setting up a schedule and and assess my problems along the way rather then running from them and hoping they go away.

Adreanna I agree with you about how people hide their problems and about how sharing their problems with people can help. I also agree with you about how I second guess myself a lot. The article you read about how teens are putting off their school work for other activities is true for a lot of kids.

(Cont.) If i rate myself i would give myself a three, a five, a two, a one, a three, a four, and a two. The link to my article is <http://www.teencollegeeducation.org/2010/07/procrastinating-in-high-school.html> its a very interesting article. 10/18/2012 02:33:04 pm
I defiantly got to rate myself a 2 I always procrastinate. I just don’t want to do it so I don’t unless it is due the next day. I really have to work on doing my work and managing my time a lot better. I can start that but it will take some getting used to. Maybe if I start to manage my time better I might get better grades on my assignments.

After reading the article I would rate myself a three or two and a half. Why? The reason is because sometimes in regards I don’t follow each step but then sometimes I do. I plan to improve my skills by setting a goal and working up to it. Start out small then grow bigger. Setting a time would be very good for me because I lose track of time a lot but them sometimes I’ll remember to the dot. In the article I read the basic focus for time management was to have a calendar full of events. So what you would do is instead of planning out just a week you would plan out the whole entire month. This would make it so you’re more aware of what’s going to go on. Your monthly event or your plan doesn’t have to be just about school it can be about afterschool activities such as sports or even planning when your favorite TV will be on.

Ally I'm not sure if I agree with you because I don't really talk to anyone much on weekends and I don't have a phone at this point so I don't really know how that would work. It is a good idea though I would like to try it during the week its just that I can't on weekends
I would rank about a 3. That ranking would get better or worse depending on the project or assignment is, but one thing that I could work on is that when I have something that needs to be done, I just need to sit down and do it.

Austin, I would rate myself on the seven things in the article a five because I can keep trace of my time. Better time management for teens is the source of my article. In the article it says that better time management for teens would allow more time to do more things that the teen wants to do. It also said that it would relive stress rom the body. There are a ton of tips for this site and every one seems to be true in some sense To finish this off havin I think that you can improve on keeping your wrist up when you type. Ireland I have not noticed anything wrong with your typing. http://www.-management-success.com/time-for-teens.html is the internet source.

Steven, you didn’t post anything about my skills. So now all I’m going to say is that I am terrible at managing my time and want to improve so I will work hard and make my schedule clear and make sure I’m organized and that everyone understands my goals I want to reach and not just me because I could use the help.

On tell others about your plans I think I would be a 1. On assessing your progress I would be a 3. On keeping the momentum going I would be a 2. On watching the clock I would be a 1. Spelling out your goals I would be a 1. Bringing your excuses to light I would be a 1. On creating a mental picture I would be a 4. http://voices.yahoo.com/helping-high-school-student-stop-procrastinating-311146.html. High school is a bad place for procrastination. Procrastination starts to show up on the longer term of projects in high school. It is best that parents get involved with their procrastinating student. They can usually help.

I am probably one of the worst procrastinator alive it’s in my blood to procrastinate if I had to give a number it would be a 1on all of them but in my opinion it should be lower. My plan to stop procrastinating is to put up a chart in my room that has all my assignments for the week and have a done or procrastinating sign and forever procrastination sign I have to do one more chore at my house. Other good ways are too tell people about your plan and you will feel obligated to fulfill the action. As well you get your moment going to finish other assignments. Toni, you have one of the best at not procrastinating once you are given an assignment you do it immediately and if you get it wrong you redo it. With that said Toni I give you a five on your procrastination evaluation. Austin you are as well one of the best at not procrastinating you does your assignments on time once you get it done will watching me goof off. Austin I give you a five. Also I can’t find anything to criticizes about any of you two Toni and Austin.

For the first skill I’d rate myself a 3. For the second skill I’d give myself a 2. I say this because I’d don’t look back until the very end of my project. The third skill I’d give myself a 4 because for most assignments I work on them until they are done. I don’t tend to wait very long to complete them. Next skill I’d give myself a 2 because I am always watching the clock or completely ignoring it. I’m not very good at keeping a pace because I end up panicking at the end to finish or at least the last few days. The sixth one I’d give myself a 3 because I can be alright at spelling out goals but other times I don’t. It really matters the assignment. The next skill for procrastination would be a 3 also because I can be ok at recognizing my faults and getting help. The last one I’d give myself a 5 because I am always seeing my goals ahead of me.

Toni thank you but I'm not sure if I agree totally with what you said because even if a made a mental list i would forget because I tend to and if I wrought out a note to my self I would set it down and forget were I put it and if I typed it up I would forget I had that but it is a very good idea if I could remember to do that everyday

I believe that when it comes to procrastinating, in the order listed on the computer I am a 4, 4, 2, 1, 3, 2, 2. Some things that I need to work on are keeping the momentum going because usually when I am doing something that is hard I don’t do anything afterwards and put them off until the last minute. I also need to work on spelling out my specific goals because some times I put things off until the last minute because it seemed like there was to much to do and I didn’t want to get started.

Hannah you have not submitted anything for me to respond to yet so I am just typing about how you need to stop procrastinating and get this blog done. I’m pretty good at not procrastinating. For the first skill I think I am a five, I always tell somebody my plans on what I want to finish and when. I want it done by. For the second thing on the list, I think I am a 5 also, I spend only a little amount of time on a small project and a larger amount of time on a larger project. I think I ‘m a 4 because I don’t always use the motivation of finishing one task to make another task seem more fun. I think I am a 5 when it comes to watching the clock and doing my work. I set a timer usually or have a sibling/parent come get me after a specific amount of time when I’m working on a project or just anything in general. I think I am a 4 on thinking ahead when it comes to a project, I think only a few steps ahead and not ahead through the whole thing that I’m doing. I’m probably a 1 for writing down or telling my excuses, I never do that, it never occurred to me that telling an excuse instead of using it would work. I think I’m a 5 in thinking about what I want the finished project to look like, I always think about what I want something to look like before I get started. To improve in the areas I’m weak in, I will try using some of the techniques that people recommend to me. In the article I found it talked about 8 ways that managing your time will help to stop procrastination, one way is to make a “To Do List” everyday, two is to use spare minutes wisely- like reading your homework on the bus ride home. Three is to find the best time to do a specific task, such as doing math in the afternoon instead of late at night, four was to review all your notes everyday. Five was get a good nights sleep,. Six is to communicate you schedule to others, seven is don’t waste time agonizing, eight is to keep things in perspective.

(Cont.) Aidan I think you can improve your procrastination by doing your work when it’s assigned. It will make things a lot easier when it comes the day when you have homework form every class and your can’t do it all at the last minute. Hannah, I think you can improve the same way, but also putting schoolwork before sports. I say that because if your grades fall you may not be able to be in any more sports.
For telling people my plans, I rate myself a two. I plan to make this number higher by telling my parents what I am up to when I do my homework. For assessing my progress along the way, I give myself a four. I plan to make this number higher by doing it all day and not just every now and then through the day. For keeping the momentum going, I rate myself a two. I intend to achieve this skill better by making myself excited over doing the task and just telling myself over and over “It’s fun”. The skill of not watching the clock and setting a timer I rate myself a 1 because I’ve only done that twice outside the school bell system…and I watch the clock a lot at home. I rate myself a four for spelling out my specific goals. I could improve at making sure and spelling out my specific goals by organizing so others can understand my goals and not just me. I rate myself a one at bringing my excuses to light. I can improve at this skill just by even thinking of it I have never thought to tell my excuses to my friends, family, or writing them down so I can actually get the work done and I think it’s a great idea that will help me to not procrastinate. For creating a mental picture of my accomplishment, I rate myself a3. I could think of that success as soon as I have that goal and not just wait until later to imagine it completed.
(1) Tell others about your plans: I’m about a 4, I am usually good at staying ahead of schedule on planning pretty big things like the junior high dances and other activities last year but I could still do better.

The two names I drew this week were Maddie and Pearl. Maddie, when I think about it I really don’t know you as well as I know Ally or Teresa but I do know that everyone procrastinates. So I think if you procrastinate as much as I, my advice to you would be to try to manage your time well and write things down a lot (That’s what I have to do a lot). Pearl, I think that if I had to critique you on something it would be the management of your time, or something like the matter of procrastinating. My advice to you Pearl would be to remember when assignments are due and come in and work, even though you have cross-country or already do come in for lunch. Comments are closed.
