Putting Off Procrastination- read the article. DO NOT PUT THIS DQ OFF - MUST HAVE INITIAL POST DONE BY WEDNESDAY!!! On the seven skills listed rated yourself between 1-5 with 5 being the best and 1 worst. Then state how you intend to improve those skills. Step 2 search the web for an article regarding procrastination or time management for high school students. Summarize your article in 3-5 sentences and provide the link to the article (list the web address) Finally - you will be given two students names in class on Monday, tell them how they can improve on one of their procrastination skills listed in the article. Remember constructive criticism is not intended to hurt, but instead to help. If you are rude in your post it will be deleted and zero given for this weeks DQ. There is no need for you to tell another student about word counts or formatting please only comment on the subject at hand. **** Some of you need to watch your spelling and punctuation in your blogs - double check you have capitalized I and names before you post and remember only put your FIRST NAME no last names ****
I believe I am around a 3, I can improve my skills by doing my work before I go on my phone, getting on my computer and watch YouTube or play games. Another way I could do better at getting work done is taking breaks from doing homework, or from games so I don't play games for 2 hours and realizing I have done nothing on my homework, if i do a bit of both i would have much more done and would most likely be able to get it done.

Jack, I think the one you should work on is also the one you put in your DQ. I know you love video games and if you could, would rather play them then do homework. I know you get your work in on time, but like you said you like to procrastinate and play games and get carried away. I think if you were to set a time limit for your games and then when the time is up, the rest of the time is homework time.

Jack, I think that you should work on assessing your progress along the way. When you are working and take a short break, see where you are at on an assignment or project. If you allow yourself to play video games at that time, you will not be making progress. It will be hard to get back on track. Use the video games for when you have finished your work or project to reward yourself for getting done.

For the first skill “Tell others about your plans” I rate myself a 2. I don’t usually tell people what I have to get done. To improve I will tell someone who can hold me accountable to meet my goals. For the second skill “Assess your progress along the way” I rate myself a 3. I put things into perspective and make time to finish my tasks, but I don’t always realize how much there is to do. To improve I will pay attention to EVERYTHING I have to do so I manage my time well. For the third skill “Keep the momentum going” I rate myself a 5. I have this down because when I am productive I like to finish everything. To improve I will continue to do so, so I will be successful. For the fourth skill “Rather than watching the clock, set a timer to stay on schedule” I rate myself a 4. I give myself a set time when I need to stop and move on, but I will improve by setting a timer so that I won’t be wasting time. For the fifth skill “Spell out your specific goals” I rate myself a 5. I have this down because I always make a checklist when I have stuff to do. To improve I will keep doing so, so I can complete my goals. For the sixth skill “Bring your excuses to light” I rate myself a 4 because I don’t always make excuses, but when I do I think about what is a priority, and I will keep doing so to improve. For the last skill “Create a mental picture of your accomplishment” I rate myself a 4 because I don’t always worry about not finishing, but when I do I will improve by thinking about finishing.

Olivia, I think that a way to improve on procrastination for you is to work on the first step "Tell others about your plans." As you said in your DQ, you need to tell somebody what you need to get done so that you will be held accountable and get it done. I think that telling more than one person would be helpful because not only will they make you get it done, but they can also help you come up with ideas for your project or task.
Maddy

Olivia I agree with what you said about the second skill "Assess your progress along the way" I think that you manage your time very well but I agree with what you said about how you need to pay attention to everything so that you know how you will manage your time with everything that you have going on.

For those seven skills listed, I would rate myself with them all together as a 3. I would rate myself really well on almost all of those skills individually except for the fourth one and the fifth one. For the fourth one I could start focusing more on the task at hand rather than looking at the clock all the time, I could set a timer to notify me. For the fifth one I don’t really write out what I’m going to do, I just go with it. I could start making a plan to split up and work in sections.

Sydney I tend to do the same thing as you by looking at the clock all the time and worrying about what time it is. What I am working on that I think you should work on would be keeping a specific schedule and sticking to it. If you are always busy it will help you because managing your time could help you a lot. I also think it could help you if you knew all the stuff you need to get done before you start.

Sydney I also, watch the clock all the time. I try to stop all the time, but it never works. It would probably help to work somewhere the a clock wasn't, and dd make a to do list.

For the very first skill, I would rate myself at a 2. I don’t think that other people really need to know about my plans and what I intend to accomplish. To help me improve I can face up to it and have someone that I can trust hold me accountable for meeting this skill. The second skill, I would rate myself at a 4. I am pretty good at taking a step back and looking at what I have accomplished and what other stuff I need to get done. I can improve this by making sure that I take a step back so then I can adjust the time I’m spending on the task. The third skill I would rate myself at a 3. Once I complete a task I feel good about myself and I do feel the need to get more things done. But some of the time I just procrastinate. To help me improve this skill I can take the energy that I have and put it into the next task. The fourth skill I would rate myself at a 2. I think that I can handle time that I have and distribute it to all of the task at hand. Sometimes I get caught up and distracted just by watching the clock and worrying if I’m ever going to finish on time. I can improve this skill by setting a timer to stay on schedule rather watching the clock and worrying. The fifth skill I would rate myself at a 3. I usually don’t write the exact steps down in order to finish a goal, I just do it. I can get better at this by breaking it apart and having them in sections. For the sixth step I would rate it at a 3. I will usually give an excuse to someone because I don’t want to get into trouble or because I don’t want to be embarrassed. I can improve this by keeping it to myself and writing it down so that nobody else has to deal with them. For the last step I would rate it at a 4. I am good at creating a mental picture in my head of what the outcome would look like. I can improve on this by writing it down or explain it to myself.

Though I do not think that you are a very big procrastinator, a way that you could help improve skill one is just talking to your friends about school and your assignments, and what you want to happen with them. They would be easy to talk to and would give you a sense of accountability for what you do. Other than that you do a good job on not procrastinating.

There are 7 steps to time management and not procrastinating. The first one is, tell others about your plans. I would rate myself a 3 on this because I share what I am doing and my ideas for my project, but I need to do this more often so I can collaborate and make sure I get things done. Next, Asses your progress along the way. I would also rate myself a 3 on this because sometimes I don’t stop and look back at what I’ve gotten done, but when I do I have found that I change things and remember more stuff to keep me on track. I need to remember to look back more often. Next, is keep the momentum going. I think I have a 5 on this because I always use my motivation to my advantage. Sometimes this can be bad because I just keep going and forget to asses my progress, but I definitely use this step. After that is, Rather than watching the clock, set a timer to stay on schedule. I would only give myself a 1 on this because I rarely use a timer and I look at the clock a lot. I need to set a timed goal to help keep me on track and that way I won’t look at the clock as much. The next step is, Spell out your specific goals. I think I have a 5 on this because I always make sure I know exactly what I need to do to get my task done. After that is bring your excuses to light. I would have to rate myself a 1 on this because I have never done this before and I’m not sure how to use this in getting things done. The last step is, create a mental picture of your accomplishment. I would give myself a 4 on this step because I like to plan out what the project should look like or what it should be similar to in the end. I use this step sometimes, but I need to use it more because I have found that when I do use this it helps me get to my final project easier.

I think that you get your work done on time so I don't really see a reason for you to increase your skills for getting them done because I have never seen you get a late assignment except for once or twice (my opinion) but if you do want to increase them a way for you to be better at managing your time is to get a calendar so that you can mark what happens when or for assignments.
Gavin

Alyssa I think that you don’t need to do anything different because you are really smart and you like have a really high GPA. You always get your work done. I’m pretty sure you never have late or missing assignments. Your also not the only person to not bring your excuses to light and I don’t even know how to but I’ll ask you because you have it probably figured out already.
Tell others about your plans. I think that I would be about a 4 I am pretty good about tell people about what I am doing or what my plans are but occasionally I won’t tell them. Assess your progress along the way. I think that I am also a 4 on this one I keep track of my progress and how I am doing to make sure that I improve most of the time sometimes I just start something and don’t think about my progress but most of the time I do. Keep the momentum going. I would give myself a 5 on this one once I find something that I am good and or something that I like I will finish it and keep it going.

I think that you only really need to work on the 3-2 range and that the others are fine but if you want to work on them that's up to you. For the one about looking at the clock, a way that you can remember to get one is to just get a stop watch or a timer and put at your desk as soon as you have time so you don't forget about it, or have a friend/family member remind you. A way that you can spell out your goal is to have someone help you, or to just do it as soon as possible so that you don't just forget to do it.

Maddy, I think your DQ was good, besides the fact that you didn’t tell us how you could improve on most of them. For the fourth one, rather than watching the clock, set a timer, you could try to ignore the people around you and try and focus on your work and the teacher. There are many ways to improve on all of these. Also, a way you can improve on the fourth one is to ask questions if you get stuck so you don’t sit there the whole class.

For the first skill, telling others about your plans, I would rate myself a three out of five. I don’t talk about by plans or what I have to do very much and that is not helping me with my grades. To improve I will start telling others what I have to get done. This way I will have more accountability. I would rate myself a two out of five when it comes to assessing my progress along the way. I could improve this by seeing when I have to get something finished and check if I am in a reasonable spot. For the fourth skill I will rate myself a four out of five because once I start something I will continue to do it. I will improve on this skill by doing homework more so I will finish it. For the fourth skill, setting a timer instead of watching the clock I would rate myself a one out of five because I never use a timer. I could improve on this by actually using a timer more often. I would rate myself a three out of five for the fifth skill, spelling out your specific goal. I could improve on this by making a checklist of things that I need to do or want to improve. For the sixth goal, bring your excuses to light, I would rate myself a three out of five. I could improve on this skill by taking time to think of what they really are… true or not. For the last skill, create a mental picture of your accomplishments, I would rate myself a three out of five. Doing this would improve my overall grades, life, and the trust people have in me.

There are 7 steps to time management and procrastination. The first step is telling others about your plans. I would rate myself a 2.5. I can improve on this by being more outspoken and tell others more about my plans. The second step is assess your progress along the way. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve on this by stopping periodically and see how I am doing in that task. The third step is keep the momentum going. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve on this by making sure everyone is still paying attention and willing to do the task and then do stuff to make the momentum keep going. The fourth step is rather than watching the clock, set a timer to stay on schedule. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve on this by setting times and dates of when I want to get it done or when to stop working on it on a specific time. The fifth step is spell out your specific goals. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve this by writing down all the goals we want to accomplish and what we want to do and at the end see if we did or not. The sixth step is bringing your excuses to light. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve on this by telling friends and seeing if they agree and see what they have to say and compare each other’s. The seventh step is creating a mental picture of your accomplishment. I would rate myself a 3. I can improve on this by creating more mental pictures of what I want it to look like that will help motivate me to keep going and finish it and be happy with the end product.

Now Danner with you not telling people what your plan is quite common for you to do during school and after. You say something you will change it and it will cause quite the problem with everyday life then people like a boss will not be happy at your for changing you mind after you had just made plans with him. Now you do quite often tell your group mates what the reason to change something but every once away you will just go off and let us figure out what to do next. You do a really good job at keeping people going and continue to work on the project with some humor in it. Which will help keep the morale of the group high. With you sometimes spacing off sometime when we are working and it usually happens when you start to look at the clock then when we ask you a question it takes a few seconds for you to respond.

For the first one, I’d give myself a 3. To improve this skill, I’ll tell my friends and family my plan and that I will get certain assignments done. For the second one, I’d give myself a 4. I do this many times to make sure I know how much I still need to do, but I could improve by looking more in detail on what I have already accomplished. For the third one, I’d also have to give myself a 4. When I do homework, I almost always get it done in one sitting. Rarely do I stop and take a short break. For the fourth one, I’d give myself a 2. I could improve on this by not checking the clock so much and maybe setting a timer. For the fifth one, I’d give myself a 3.5. When I do it, things are organized, when not, they can get messy. For the sixth one, I’d give me a 2. To improve I could tell people my excuses on my assignment and realize that they are ridiculous. For the final one I give myself a 4.5. I’m always thinking about the final product, and what I want it to look like.

I think that I am pretty good at telling others about my plans and I would rate myself either a 3 or a 4 because I usually just start to brag about stuff that I am going to be doing because I am proud of myself. The second skill is about assessing your progress along the way. I would rate myself a 3 because I am good at seeing what I have done wrong and I can fix it all for the future. The third skill is about keeping the momentum going. I would rate myself a 4 because when I know that I am doing good at something I have the motivation to keep doing it or to get better at it. The fourth skill is about setting a specific time for things. I would rate myself a 2 because I always look at the clock and hope that class will get over sooner. The fifth skill is about spelling out your specific goals. I would rate myself a 3 because I do like to set specific goals for something if I want to achieve it. The sixth skill is about bringing your excuses to light. I would rate myself a 3 because I do like to make excuses but I make excuses about what I haven't done. The seventh step is to create a mental picture of your accomplishment. I would rate myself a 4 because I am really good at making pictures in my head about my accomplishment.

Tanner, I think that your initial response is good except for one thing, you aren’t telling anyone anything about how you intend to improve these skills. You could maybe improve the first one by less bragging and more on the line of making people aware and just talking about it. You could improve the fourth one by working until the bell and focusing on your work, your work is more important than anything else going on around you(usually). You could also improve on the sixth one by running them by your friends and keeping them truthful. I’m sure you could figure out the rest of them on your own.

With the five things listed I would rate myself a three out of five. I can improve by telling myself all of the benefits of getting that certain thing done early. Jaden I think that you could improve on the one that says “Tell others about your plans.” I think that you could improve this one because you don’t always tell people what your plans are and all of the details about them. On the first skill which is tell others about my plan, I would rate myself a 2, because I don’t really tell others what I am doing or what I need to do. What I can do to improve this, is I can tell people that I trust about what I have to do so that they can hold me accountable for what I have to do. The second skill is assess your progress along the way, I would rate myself at least a 3, because when I say that I am going to write my progress down I sometimes will do it, but other times I will not do it because I just don’t feel like it. What I can do to improve this is I can take a break to realize what I have done and so that I can track it. The third skill is keep the momentum going, I would rate myself a 2, because I never really want to do anything so I never really have the momentum to do anything. What I can do to improve this is I can try to stay off of my phone and my laptop, so that I can get more done and so that I can concentrate better. The fourth skill is rather than watching the clock, set a timer to stay on schedule, I would rate myself a 1 because if I set a clock I will just look at the timer that I set so that I can see whenever the timer is going to go off. What I can do to improve this is I can set the timer and then I can put where I can’t get it and I can sit down on my bed, because I’m lazy so I won’t have the momentum to get up. The fifth skill is spell out your specific goals, I would rate myself a 3.5, because I I don’t really feel like I really need to do that. What I would do to improve this is I would ask someone so that I can better understand why this is necessary to do when you are working. The sixth thing is bring your excuses to light, I would rate myself a 2.5-3, because I know that I am a procrastinator and I feel like this is more for people that feel like they don’t have a problem. What I would do to improve this is I can try to write them down even though I know that I am a procrastinator. The final skill is create a mental picture of your accomplishment, I would rate myself a 4, because this one I feel like I can create a mental picture, but that doesn’t really motivate me to do it. What I can do to improve this is when I create the mental picture I can try to do what I want to accomplish when I have the mental picture in my head.

Kelsey, I think that you have some good ideas on how to improve your skills, but another thing that you can do to help with skill number four is don't set a timer at all. If a timer doesn't work for you then what you can do is have a minimum amount of time you will work then go where there is no clock. You can work for and when you get to a good spot you can take a break, if you haven't worked long enough then you can go back. This will also give you time to asses what you've done.
Sydney
11/30/2016 09:58:14 pm
Kelsey, I think setting the timer some where, where you won't be able to reach it would be good. Another thing you could do so you don't worry about it so much is have one of your family members watch the time and you can tell them when you should be done working and have them come in and notify you when you are finished and can take a break. That way you can focus on your work and not the time.

On the first skill, tell others about your plans, I would rate myself a 2.5 because, I don’t usually like to talk to people for any reason. I can improve on this skill by talking to people more and being a little more open. On the second skill, assess your progress along the way, I would rate myself a 3.5 because sometimes I like to just speed through some of my tasks and not check myself. I could improve on this skill by slowing down and checking myself periodically. On the third skill, keep the momentum going, I would rate myself a 3 because, I don’t really like doing more than I have to, sometimes I do but usually not. I could improve on this by doing more than I think is good. On the fourth skill, rather than watching the clock, set a timer to stay on schedule, I would rate myself a 3 or 4 because, I like to look at the clock but I always like to get things done quickly. I can improve on this skill by keeping to the task at hand, working in a quiet area, and not watching the clock. On the fifth skill, spell out your specific goals, I would rate myself a 3 because, I sometimes don’t like to keep track of certain things. I could improve on this by keeping track of my goals and taking things step by step. On the sixth skill, bring your excuses to light, I would rate myself a 3 or 4 because I don’t always like to talk to people about my work/school work. I could improve on this skill by talking to my friends and maybe my parent and seeing if they would agree or not. On the last and seventh skill, create a mental picture of your accomplishment, I would rate myself a 4 because I like to think about how it will look like when I am done. I can improve even more on this skill by thinking positive and always doing my best even if I am tired.

Now Brooke you don't always keep the momentum going you sometimes will stop and start talking and stop the group and the progress of the project. On checking the clock you do a pretty good job at it and you don't stop just to see what time it is. On spelling out the goal you do a pretty good job at that as you usually like to tell people what the goal is for you. On bring a excuses you are right you rarely go and talk about what your plan is and that can be a bigger problem when its more of a team project not a partner project and that could be a huge problem when everyone has to know what the plan is. But for most of the other things you said I could not agree more for the 3's and 4's so on the most part.

I would probably have to rate myself on this as a 2, or a 3. It depends on if I' am motivated. I tend to watch the clock way to much and struggle with that. That's why I probably get behind on homework and spend extra time on it. I think I could work on telling a friend my plan of when, and how I am going to get something done. I also, could work on assessing my progress along the way like maybe go get a drink of water, and go do something that's quick. I could spell out my goal also, like what is my goals, what I want to accomplish, and get done.

How you could help yourself not procrastinate is to just focus on the task at hand, and try not to get distracted. Though you could take a break to get a glass of water to look back at what you have done, it also kills your focus and after that it can be hard not to get to work again. To get rid of some distractions you could work in a quiet space by yourself, and set a timer for as long as you want to work so that you are not constantly checking the clock.

Tell others about your plans. I rate myself at 2.5 because I’m don’t always tell people what I’m doing all the time. I will start telling the people who need to know what I am doing.so they will hold me accountable. I probably never have assessed my work so I say I’m a 1. I could change this by trying it and see how it benefits me and my grades. I usually get a little side tracked so I don’t really keep the momentum going. One way I could keep on task is to practice not to talking to my neighbors and if they talk I tell them I’m working. Well I’ve never sent a timer because I never thought of it actually but I might try it to stay on task. I have never spelled out all of my tasks so I rate myself a 2 because I kind of think of them in my head. I have never brought excuses to light so I am a 0/1 I’m definitely going to try it so I cannot use excuses anymore. I do make mental pictures in my head while I’m doing things so I rate myself 4 because I’m not always doing it but I do it most of the time.

For the first skill out of the seven skills given in the article, tell others about your plans, I put the rating down as 3. It's easy for me to tell people about my plans considering the fact that I'm such a natural chatterbox at times. However, to improve on this, instead of telling my plans to just anybody, I'm going to tell the right people who I can trust and who will actually help me. The second skill, assess your progress along the way, is harder for me to do. When I get started on a task I also try to do it at either a fast pace or in one sitting and because of this, I don't take the time to stop and review, so, because of this, I put the rating down as a 2. To improve this skill, I will slow down a little and take a couple of minutes to stop and review my progress. The third skill is keep the momentum going, which for this skill I put the rating down as a 4. This one's really easy for me, as long as I get it started in the first place. As I said for the previous skill, I try to do it really fast or right then and there. The improvement is the same as the previous skills other than the fact that I also need to organize more.

I agree with you on the second skill. However, I think if you set some goals for when to stop and set some timers of when to stop, you can check to see how far you have gotten. You can also see if you had passed any of your goals you had set before you had started. This will help you stay on track. Comments are closed.
