This week you will be writing two inital comments and only replying to one student. So be sure that you complete DQ#8a and DQ#8b.
Read the article "For Students: How to Make the Most of Group Work." a) Has your experience with group work been positive or negative? Why? b) Goals 1-7 can help you have a positive experience, but which one do you think would be hard to do and why? c) Finally, which of the 7 goals do you think would be the most important when working with students in this class? What about students that you don't know as well or haven't worked with in the past? Why?

It has mostly been a Positive experience. Since I had most of the groups that I work with I know and I can work with which makes thing a lot easier. It would be 2 that I would have the problem with because most of the people I have worked with made it so that the other group members can't give a idea. It would be 7 because it is always best to make any changes if necessary. Most of the people that I have or have not really don't give me a good imprecation on what they do.

a) I think that my experience with group work has been positive. Most of my group work has been with my classmates and I think that I get along well with all of my classmates. Also if we ever did get in a situation where we disagreed then we easily solved it.

I agree with your DQ! I think that the sixth task would be the hardest too because a lot of people might not have enough time with sports and other activities going on. Some people also don't have phones so we couldn't contact them so easily. If you have to put off the meeting you might not get it all done like you said. So overall I agree with your DQ.

It really just depends on the group. It is mostly positive, but sometimes it's negative because of the people in your group. When something usually don’t work someone gets mad and walks out or tells the teacher and they get in trouble.

Imigin, I completely agree with your response. I agree with you that having a positive experience in a group project would just depend on the people. I also think that everyone should be involved in the project so everyone can get a good grade, you make a very good point!

My experience with group work is good, I get along with my classmates and who ever I am working with very well most of the time. I always get good grades in my group projects because we work well together. Number two is “Be sure that each individual’s ideas and contributions are respected and considered.” I think that it would be the hardest because sometimes you are in a group with people who just want to take over and do it themselves but it is important to make sure that everybody gets to share their opinion and ideas. I think that the most important one would be number one and it is “Make sure that all group members have an opportunity to contribute to all stages of the assignments, from the planning stages to completion of the tasks. I think that this is the most important one because you want everybody to get a good grade and everybody to participate so that you can get a better grade.

I agree with your DQ. I thought you explained everything very well and I agree with the steps you listed. I especially like how said what the step was since I would not have remembered what each step was if you didn't say what it was. I thought your DQ was great.

My experience with group work has been positive. I have gotten good grades in my group projects and presentations. I also have gotten along with my group and made sure that we all contributed to the work and when we presented. I think number two would be the hardest. Number two is “Be sure that each individual’s ideas and contributions are respected and considered.” This will be difficult because when one person has an opinion or idea you would want to use yours not somebody else’s. It’s also hard because some people might not respect somebody’s ideas. Number one is the most important one because if only one or two people contribute then it will be cheating and not fair to the people who did all the work. Also everybody’s ideas need to be considered. This is also important for people you haven’t worked with before because you need to hear their ideas since you haven’t worked with them before.

Alyssa I really like your DQ! I also thought that number 2 was one of the hardest. It's hard. I also agree with your last part, it will definitely help you, I think to get to know the person more. It's also good to hear everyone's idea. Overall I thought you did really good on this DQ and completely agreed with what you said in it.

I agree with your DQ. I also agree that number two could also be hard. It's also a good idea to listen to everyone's idea and get to known the person more that you are working with. Your DQ was very excellent!!!!

a) In my experience with group work it is usually a positive time. Sometimes we have misunderstandings or sometimes it has to do with someone proving someone else wrong. Otherwise usually the groups are positive because we all know we need get this stuff done either way.

My experience with group work has primarily been negative. I think that this is because I tend to have different and more complex ideas or ideas that others don't understand. I also get frustrated when I don't get to voice my opinion or have a say in what's going on, which is what happens 90% of the time. Otherwise, I do great. Because of these problems that I normally have when working in a group, I think that number three of the goals would be hard to do because not everyone's just going to make sure everyone is getting a say in the project and maybe that person isn't fond of the other person and chooses to ignore them. I know that seems ridiculous, but it has happened many times for me. This is hard specifically because of the people in the group that cause the situation to vary. The most important goal, however, is the goal that I think is hardest: Each person getting to put some input into the work and being included. Many of my classmates don't bother to check and see if the others are getting to suggest different things; this can lead to the silent people getting upset and even angry which then creates a negative environment and could potentially damage the progress and outcome of the work itself. As for classmates that I haven't worked for much, I'd say that this can be applied to that situation as well. Even if you don't know them well or don't know their techniques when working, you still need to ask for their opinion, otherwise, it's going to be a stressful and frustrating time.

My experience with group projects have been quite positive. I have always been able to count on the other people in my group to get their part of the task done. We have also always gotten pretty good grades on them and everyone comes up with ideas and is always active in the project. One of the hardest steps I think would be #5 because when you split up the tasks, you hope that they’re reliable, but I think it would be hard to know that other people are doing their work correctly and at the best they can. I haven’t really had that problem, but some people are just that way. I think that 1 and 2 are really important because those are things that are pretty essential when working in a group. You want to make sure everyone contributes and that they put some sort of work or effort into the project so they learn to do work and not have people do it for them. I also think it’s good for the people you don’t really know because in these two steps you get to see what type of person they’re and you could really bust up their confidence if you consider them and their ideas. Also they could end up being very helpful.

Sydney I agree with what you said about being able to count on other people but have any of your experiences been negative? like have any of your group members let you down or not let you complete an assignment. On step five I have to agree with what you said about not being able to tell if they are working or doing the work so I think that you should do a couple problems and then check and see if they get it or not.

Through all my experiences with working with a group it has gone, I think, very well. I think that it has been very positive because I got to know the people I am working with better and also I got to find out how other people think about the work that is given to us. I think that the hardest one to do out of numbers 1-7 would be number five. I think that it would be the hardest because some of the people in your group might not be able to figure out the problem that is given to them, and then the other people that did other problems would also have to do the person that didn't get its' work. I think that the most important number on that list would be number two. You need to make sure that all of the member's ideas get contributed and recognized. If you just ignore someone with a good idea then your presentation would not be as good. Even though you might not know everyone in your group everybody should still share their ideas and maybe you would get to know each other better.

I meant to say that I thought number five was hardest because it seems like a problem that might be tough for the person assigned it to solve and then others in the group would have to do that problem as well.

My experience with group work has been positive because everyone is willing to help out and contribute and everyone is willing to cooperate and everyone agrees and they will think about others idea’s. I think the 6th task would be the hardest probably because a lot of people are busy and might have sports or other activities like FFA. It might be hard to come up with a time and place that everyone could meet. Some people don’t have phones and it’s hard to get a hold of them. I think the first guideline would be the most important because everyone needs to contribute to the project and have a certain part in that project. Their ideas are important to contribute in order to make it a successful group.

Danner I agree with the fact that people will have a hard time doing something because of sports and other things. Also with everyone doing something that may change what is going on with the group.

Danner, I agree with your DQ! I also thought that the first guideline would be the most important. I also agree with how you believe number 6 would be the hardest one to follow even though I didn’t choose it myself. I think that those two are both hard to follow.

Most of the groups that I have worked in are positive, but I have worked in some negative groups. In groups your something going to have disagreements, or arguments. Some people will just try to take over the group and sign people there parts and not ask for there input. If I am working in a negative group I try to make it positive. I think 6 is good, because everyone should agree on a time, where, and when to meet so everyone can make it. The goal that It think would be great when working with a person that your haven't worked with yet is 2. Two is a good one, because when your work with some one new you want to give them respect and respect there ideas. So that they will want to work with you again. Also, so that they will respect you and your ideas.

I have done group projects that were bad and good. Everyday in Algebra we have to work as a team to do our classwork together. Sometimes it can be difficult for everyone to stay on task and get the work done, but sometimes it is also a positive experience because I learn to be patient with my peers and I also get extra help. Out of the seven goals, I think the most difficult one would be number six because people are always busy doing different things and it might be hard to try and get a whole group together to work on a project if everyone is busy. I think the most important goal out of the seven would be number 5. If everyone is assigned something to do then there won’t be one person who has nothing to do, and the project might get done quicker. I would choose the same goal for people who you don’t usually interact with because they will have something to do and they won’t be left out of the work along with any other students.

My experience with working with groups is not good because when I try and work fast I have to wait because my group is to slow and i have to take my own time to teach them how to do stuff and that usually takes a while to do. I think the hardest step would be step 7 because step seven says evaluate as a group after every problem and if you get people that don't know what to do then it would take the whole class period to do one problem. Step one would be the best so all people in your group can get a chance to do work and they would know how to do the stuff on the assignments. It would also be good for students you don't know because you would be testing them to see if they know what they are doing or if you'll have to help them the rest of your life.

For me, my experience with group work has been a pretty positive experience. Most of the time I get to choose who I get to work with and it is usually my friends, we work, chat, and have a good time while still getting work done. Out of all the goals on the website, I think that goal number 2 could be the hardest. Sometimes you get put in a group with someone who doesn’t want to contribute or talk, and will just be an annoyance because they will be either like, no you are doing it wrong! Or just say nothing at all. The goal that I think would be most important when working with students in this class would be goal number 3, because very often in class people don’t talk. This also would mean that everyone is contributing to the project, rather than doing nothing. If it is a student or someone I don’t know very well, then goal number 3 again would be most important. It will make you communicate and get to know the person a bit better, and then you won’t have to work in silence, and everyone helps and participates in the project. Comments are closed.
