A RESUME FITTING A SUPERHERO OR HEROINE SUMMARY Using My Education and Work History component of the My CIS Portfolio, students develop a resume for a favorite superhero or other fictional character. StudentsÕs understanding of how personal achievements or accomplishments enhance a resume is then applied to developing or strengthening their own resumes. OBJECTIVE(S) Students will: 1. Use the Data Collection Form component to gather potentially useful information about their hero and then themselves. 2. Use the Resume Data Entry component to enter resume information collected for hero and then themselves. 3. Use the Create Resume component to select a resume style for hero and then themselves. 4. Create a personal resume that highlights their achievements or accomplishments. PREPARATION Ensure that each student has a ÒMy CIS PortfolioÓ before starting the activity. See Creating a My CIS Folder Quick Start, or log on to the eCIS Administrator web site at http://idcis.intocareers.org/administration/ and create portfolios for your students (Manage Portfolios/Create and Edit Portfolios). Become familiar with the My Education and Work History component in the My CIS Portfolio to understand its content and organization. Review the resume information in eCIS Job Search. Ask students how and why accomplishments or achievements should be a part of a resume. Discuss the influence of such information on an employer. 3. Hand out the sample Batman resumes and discuss the information provided. Have some fun with it! 4. Brief the students on Education and Work History content and organization if it is unfamiliar. 5. Distribute Resume Data Collection Forms. Requesting a balance between male and female characters, divide class into small groups and ask each to select a real or fictional hero. Have each group discuss and complete a Resume Collection Form worksheet with all the information that could potentially be used about their hero (they can use the Internet to do research). Groups should be prepared to report and discuss their research and information at the next class or group session. 6. After discussion, each group converts the information they have collected into a ÒsuperÓ resume using the My Education and Work History component. ¥ Use the Resume Data entrycomponent to enter their information. Check the help screens to develop their entries. ¥ Use Create Resumecomponent to select a resume style that best fits their hero. Try all the formats available. ¥ Correct spelling, grammatical errors, awkward or incomplete entries and misinformation. ¥ Print the best resume and be ready to share it and what they learned about enhancing their own resumes from this activity. 7. As a class, discuss all or selected ÒsuperÓ resumes. You may wish to post the resumes for all group members to see. Alternatively, discuss resume development using the following questions: ¥ What accomplishments and achievements do students in the class represent? ¥ What skills are represented in the different accomplishments and achievements? It will be helpful to students to emphasize that they haveskills, as shown by their accomplishments and achievements. ¥ What purposes does a resume have for a potential employer? ¥ What role does the resume appearance have in impressing an employer? ¥ What information should a high quality resume contain? 8. Students use the steps in number 6 (above) to develop their individual resumes. After printing their resumes they should ask the following questions to make sure it is a ÒsuperÓ resumeÐtheir super resume. ¥ Does it show potential employers how they will benefit by interviewing me? ¥ Does it emphasize my accomplishments or achievements and skills? ¥ Does it look attractive, with a pleasing layout, effective use of white space, and appropriate organization? ¥ Does it use action words? If any of the students cannot answer yes to all the above questions, they need to rewrite or revise their resumes. Those five evaluating questions are part of the assessment process, too. VARIATIONS 1. After an introduction to resumes, have students read books about personal lives of fiction or nonfiction characters and write a resume for the main character.
