Community Service.
As a Freshman this is your first time that community service hours are required, but why do we as teachers find it an important part of your education. I have listed a website above written about community service. Your job for this DQ is to write an article for publication much like the one above. You are to persuade your peers and others to get involved in community service. Your writing must be persuasive and must be with proper writing. Use your personal opinion and any research you can do on the topic (remember to site sources). You will need provide feedback to two students - either about how their post has persuade you or how they can write their article better. Any advice needs to be constructive and will allow the writer time to correct errors before being graded. So help your peers.

Community service, some people in our school of Pomeroy see it as a bothersome chore needed to go on to the next grade, but I see it as an opportunity to help someone in need who cannot perform the task at hand, or for people who just do not have time to do it. For me my community service every summer is mowing my neighbor’s lawn because it is a task that if I did not do it would not be done or they would have to carve extra time to do it which would be very inconvenient for them. I also continue to do this task even after I have fulfilled my hours. Why, people ask, should you do community service? Well, I have three reasons that I do it, one it makes you feel good inside. Two, it helps the community almost always no matter what you are doing. Finally three, it creates a good image for yourself and your family name. Now some people just, “say oh, well who cares”. Well some days I have this attitude when I go to cut my neighbor’s grass, but when I am done I love the sight of accomplishment, or success as we talked about in the last DQ. Not only has this made me feel really good inside, it also puts a smile on my neighbor’s face and mine. But by the end of the day this is better than any payment that I could receive for this chore. Now to all of these people who think community service is a bothersome chore, think of it as a way to better the community for yourself and others, no matter if it is working in the community garden, mowing your neighbor’s lawn, fixing items, or swiping the town for trash. Find something you will enjoy doing. In doing this remember to keep a smile on your face because it will put a smile on the face of the person you are servicing and it might even make their day, week, month or even their year.

I think it is good that working for others makes you feel good inside. Your absolutely right, it creates a good image of you in our community. Great job, Devon, keep it up

Devon, I felt that your article is really moving for people to go out for community service. It is true that many here in Pomeroy find it as a bore some chore. What a lot of people don’t realize is the actual impact that it has on people.

I know I am commenting on a comment here but this is by far the best explanatory and in my opinion all around comment on here it gives the basic idea of general approval, and then goes on to say why the writer agrees with the original poster.

Devon, your article made me feel like I should jump up right now and go do some community service. I liked how you wrote about how you felt when you were mowing your neighbor’s lawn. The feeling of accomplishment and joy at the look on the faces of the people you gave your time to can only be experience not explained.

Devon, I think the reasons you do community service reflect very well of the character you are. Those reasons are exactly why I do community service. I also think it is very nice of you to continue to mow your neighbor’s lawn even though you don’t have to any more. Like you said “it creates a good image for yourself and your family name”. Your article persuaded me because you really tell us how people who don’t do community service look like. I don’t want to look like that.

Devon, I like you perspectives and believe that you did a wonderful job with you article. Your article made me think even more about this subject and see how much bigger it is than people believe. Lots of teenagers these days don’t see why they are doing community service and I think that your article would really make people who have never thought about it think more about why they are helping someone out and making their lives easier.

Devon, I really liked your response to this DQ. It was very well organized and you gave me some really good ideas. I agree with you when you say that it is enjoyable when you put a smile on somebody's face. It makes you feel like you have done something great and it makes you feel better about yourself.

Chance, I completely agree with you and I think your response to community service was very persuasive. I also think it will get people to go out and do some good things for the community, for those of you who choose to read Chance’s response. I agree that you should do little things even though you cannot use them as service hours, these little tasks may not seem like a lot but it can still make a difference, and it might even make that persons day. I see you agreed with me about feeling good about service and creating an image. I really do think that this is what community service is all about. It is not about the outcome of what you will receive in return for the task, but how this person feels, what they will say about you to others in the community, and most of all how you feel about what you have done and how accomplished you feel. These are all things you have put in your response Chance it I really think it is great. Keep up the good work bud.

Chance, when you said, “stuff like the ones listed above wouldn’t count. You would need to do bigger things”, I felt that no matter what you do should count, if not for the school then for yourself. The smallest and simplest of things could change how you feel, how the community feels, or change the community all together. I think it is a good article besides but you should never think that just because the school won’t accept the small things as community service does not mean you shouldn’t do them. Like you said always look for opportunities.
Chance R.

Tabitha, I understand where you are confused on that. I was stating that even though small acts don't count for community service hours, you should still do it.

Chance, I like how you put the definition first and the why you agree with community service. I believe even though you cannot do a lot of things you need to at least help elders, teachers. Even though it takes some of your time it helps the community, and also yourself.

Chance, in my opinion, you had very valid points about what community service really is. I like how you made sure to state that just caring for others by carrying their groceries can make our community better, and most people don’t think about those little things that make a good community. I completely agree with your claims and think that you did a fantastic job at covering all different parts of community service.

Chance, I completely agreed with your response to this DQ. It was very persuasive and made me think a lot about community service and how it can help other people. I also agreed with what you said about people being too lazy to even attempt community service. I feel the same way as you about this.

I believe community service is a very important part in a well-rounded education. It helps us learn about the community and its people outside of the school. It also gives them a chance to learn about us through an activity other academics and athletics. It is a mutual benefit to everyone involved. It teaches us to give up our time without expecting anything in return. Far too often when we do something for others we expect some sort of payment. Community service helps the community out because you are doing a job for them that they would normally have to pay for.

Tabitha, I completely agree with your response to community service. I think that you are right about far too often we expect things in return for tasks, but in reality you don’t always need anything in return. How you feel after is enough. Also how it makes you look in your community. I also agree with you saying it helps you get into good colleges because if you put it on your resume then they will see how you are willing to help your community better without payment. Finally I agree that it will help you in the future for getting a job because the responsibilities are the same expect you are not getting payed.

Tabitha I agree with you on your opinion of community service. Yes if you don't do community service you cant graduate, but you should enjoy helping out your community and trying to make your neighborhood a better and happier place.
Tabitha McCoard

Stacy, I think that you are completely right. Even if you don’t graduate you should always enjoy helping your community, friends, and neighbors. Making other people happy should make you happy too so you should always help you community.

Tabitha, I agree with your article, and like the part about others learning about you through the community service you do. I also liked your comment about how people often expect something for any work they do. Both were ideas I didn’t think about when I wrote my article, but I think they are both important and accurate details.

Tabitha, I agree with you all the way that community service is a very important part in education. In my opinion is almost the same of how it will help us get education outside of the school, to be disciplined, and to give back to the community. Getting advantages for getting into schools; it's required, but it's still important. I like how you worded your paragraphs into different sections.

Ashton, thank you for agreeing with me. I too agree that community service gives us education outside of school. It also gives us a chance to give back to our community in ways we never would have thought of before. Thank you for your compliment on how I organized my paragraphs.

Ashton I totally agree with your statement that community service teaches us how to be disciplined and helps us to get to know the people of our community better. That is a very good point because when you ask for jobs that you can get community service for then you could end up with a person you have never met before.

Ashton, good job on the DQ this week. I particularly liked how you gave a definition of community service. I also like how you said that let’s community service builds character, teamwork, and shows us that we don’t always need money to do something good for the community.

Community service is important to me because I think that helping out the community is a very good thing to do. By helping out the community you could make a very good name for yourself and be highly respected. A few thing I have done for community service are painting golf sheds, putting up a sign on a county road, and helping out at a girls basketball tournament by running clock and concessions. This tournament was run by one of my friends his name is Cort LaMunyan. I respect him greatly because he is a sophomore and he ran the tournament all by himself and all the money went to a hospital as charity money. It was very selfless of him to do that. His actions have inspired me to want to help out our community and town. Requiring community service is a good idea because it teaches kids how to work hard without getting paid and doing it to help someone out. All community service is is recording how long you worked to help out someone else which is a very good life skill. I think community service is very important because some colleges like the fact that you can help someone else.

What is community service? Community service is when you give up your time to help someone or help the community do something for free. Around here it seems like most people don’t like doing community service. They only do it because it is a school requirement in order to pass to the next grade. I think that is because they are either to lazy or hate working for free. In the past, I hated doing community service because I didn’t like working for free. But when I started doing it more often, I felt proud of myself for donating my time to help someone do something without charge. My biggest community service project was this year during the school year. I helped my friend Cort LaMunyan run a basketball tournament. I ran clock and also did trash duty. It was a lot of work but at the end all the money we made went to a good cause. In our school freshmen need 10 hours of community service. I think that is a fair amount because it’s not too much or too little. I also think making community service a requirement is a good idea because it shows responsibility to the students.

Oscar I agree completely with your statement that around here a lot of people don’t like doing any community service. I think that everyone should have the good heart to want to help someone out. Although a lot of times people are busy and I can understand that. I think that if everyone did at least a little community service then our community would be a better place.

Oscar,I kind of agree with you when you said “Around here it seems like most people don’t like doing community service”. I have helped at the food bank for a few years and it seems like people have been a lot less generous, at least compared to past years.

I believe that community service is important and should be done. Some of the students at our school think that community service is a chore that needs to be done to get to the next grade, but I believe that it is much more than that. I think that it is giving thanks to the community and or helping someone that needs it. I also think that it is a good thing because you would be giving back to the community that has done so much for you. You may not think so but just remember, our community is who paid for the school, lunch and food stamp programs, athletics, the hospital and so much more. In my opinion, it is the most important thing that a student does while they are in school. I also don’t think that you need to be paid to do something for someone or something else, just knowing that you helped with something greater then yourself is reward enough. I hope that I am not the only one who has these opinions in this important subject.

Mahala I agree with you that a lot of the people in this school look at community service as a chore. I also believe that is much more important. It does give thanks to community and it does make you feel better helping out the community.

Mahala, I agree with you. Our community does so much for us that we don’t know or don’t realize. Giving back to the community is the least we can do to repay them for all the things that they do for us.

Community Service is important for many reasons. It teaches you how to build leadership skills and that you can help others just by doing the simplest things. I think that many people in our school just see it as something we have to do to go to the next grade, but I think there is much more to it. By helping other people in your community for free and donating your time is very helpful and I am glad it is required by our school. This year I helped my friend Cort with his basketball tournament. I got to the gym at 6:30 in the morning and I was there until 8:00 that night helping set up and take everything down. Throughout the day I ran the clock and refereed some games. I really enjoyed doing it because I love basketball and I got to watch basketball all day. There are a lot of community service opportunities in our community and a lot of them are pretty easy and enjoyable. That is why I don’t understand why people wait until the last minute or not at all to get their community service done. As a freshman you only have to donate 10 hours out of the entire school year to help somebody out. So my question to you is, “Is it really that hard to take 10 hours out of your school year to help another person.” I definitely don’t think so.
Brandon

Ryan, I agree with your comment, and I especially liked the parts about people waiting until the last moment to get their community service hours done and seeing community service only as something required to move on to the next grade level in school. I think that is a fairly accurate statement, and it makes sense to get your community service done early so you don’t have to worry about it at the last moment.

Community Service is something that everyone should enjoy doing. If you regularly do community service you will most likely have a high chance of knowing more people and interacting with people. I am a very sociable person and helping others is something that I really love to do. I like to make other people happy because that makes me happy. I volunteer not only for community service for just some community service hours for school, but just because I know that some people don’t have the time or don’t have the physical capability to do what they need to do. Community Service can spread from mowing some ones lawn, to volunteering at a hospital. Community service that you do will always be with you. Community service looks good on college resumes, and can help you get a job. I believe that as I get older that I will still do community service. I will probably raise my kids in believing to help their community stay clean, or just helping someone with cleaning their house. I believe that it is respectful and elders look at you with more respect if you are involved respectfully in the community. Community service can really help you in life. I urge everyone to participate in their community.

Community service is very important. It helps people in need, helps to aid the community, and can allow people to connect and grow relationships. I personally think that community service is really important part of a student’s education because it helps to teach them that it is important to be an active member of their community. There are also several different benefits of community service. For Example, volunteer work is very good for your health. A study done by United Health Group and the Optum Institute showed that over 70 % of U.S adults felt healthier, had lower stress levels. It can also lowers blood pressure, and can prevent or make people feel less depressed and feel more socially connected which can increase your live span. Also community service looks good on a resume or college application. When going to college, community service is a big part of what they look for up with challenging high school classes, good grades, and good scores on standardized tests. So even if it is just a small thing like holding the door for some one behind you to something huge like build a house it will not only be for others benefit but it will also be for yours.

It is very important to be involved in community service. Community service helps you help other people, which is always fun to do. Many schools require you to do community service, but as long as the number of hours the school requires is easily obtainable within the amount of time you are given to complete those hours, I think requiring community service hours is a good idea. Having community service hours also helps you get into a good college, and eventually a job. Community service also has personal benefits. According to experts, it can reduce stress. Volunteering for community service also makes you feel good about yourself. It also saves resources by reducing the number of paid workers needed to complete a project. You can also use community service as a way to try out different careers. Using community service to do this, you can learn a lot, such as what skills you have and what people do in that job. Community service encourages staying active in a community by helping other people. You are also working with other people, so you get a chance to be social by working with friends or meeting new people. When working with your friends, community service can be a lot of fun.
