When a student prepares a report for a teacher they are expected to proofread their work, in the business world this is also expected. What do you think an employeer or a customer would think of someone who doesn't proofread their work?
What are some tips you have for others to help make proofreading and editing your work easier. You must also respond to at least one other student's comment.

An employer’s or customer’s opinion of someone who doesn’t proofread their own work would be very big. I think their opinion would be thinking the person is just lazy and doesn’t really care what their work looks like. That’s not the opinion you want from other people. You want them to think you’re very organized and tidy with your work. A good tip to fix this problem would be if you are summiting work to someone make sure to reread it. Go through the work you did and make sure you have no misspelled words or grammar errors. Now if you’re thinking this is too much work to do, you’re wrong because summiting good work will give you a good first impression on how you do your work. Proofreading is a big thing when applying for something. So just make sure you go back and recheck and reread. Now if you’re using Microsoft Word you have a tool that is spelling and grammar which will help in some cases but you’re probably going to want to reread. Having good work is something you want.

Very true Ally; you want them to think you are professional. You don’t want to look like you are a two year old that snuck on the computer. You can ask others to reread your work to make sure you have it right. Then make sure to fix all the errors.

Ally great post, but when you reread you don’t always spot errors. Do you know one way to reread that will allow you to spot errors? Also you talk about Microsoft Word and spell check and grammar check, but is the computer always correct?

As a business associate, you should have your work proofread. A person who doesn't have their work proofread doesn't have their work done. To show that work to the fellow workers, boss or your customers is not professional at all. It would be like having an airsoft gun and no barrel or buying pencils with no lead. Proofreading is a vital part in your work. It shows that you are professional ,you look like you know what you are doing, and that will make people want to buy your product. If you are putting an ad in the paper, you need to proofread it to make sure you don't sound uninformed and make your company look bad. My dad always says quality before quantity, I completely agree. It doesn't matter how much you did it is always how well you have done it.

Your dad is correct, the quality of your work is most important. Proofreading is essential in the business world, but what are some tips you can give your fellow classmates on how to proofread your work?

Jack, I first must say that I liked your similes that you used. That was a good way to compare proofreading to stuff that people can relate, such as an airsoft gun without a barrel and a pencil without led. I agree with your dad too that quality comes before quantity, just like a T.V.

I think that it is very important to proof read what you write. It allows the reader to take you seriously because who really pays attention to something that is written without much thought or care. Proof reading can make you appear more proffesional and not un educated. People tend to notice things that are incorrect and it can effect how seriously you are taken. If your boss reads something that you wrote and didnt proof read it can make him\her think you are lazy you dont want your employer to think you are lazy. It is just easier to proof read what you wrote than to get a bad grade from a teacher or be thought less of by an employer.

DK - you are usually the one who catches all the errors in the work. Go back and reread your post, are there errors? Is there a way to check your work when you don't have Word to help you with spelling and grammar errors? Give one piece of advice to students on how to prevent errors when you don't have a program to edit for you?

Anyone who doesn’t proof read their work probably doesn’t get very much. If you don’t proof read your work and it doesn’t make sense your point won’t get to the other person. If you went around what you wanted you might have not even made any sense. It is a very important thing to proof read you own stuff. You want to know that what others will be seeing then you got to read what you are writing to make sure it makes sense. You won’t be heard if you don’t make any sense, you could have something easy to ask or even you essay but if it doesn’t make sense you won’t get what you want. If you type a message you might think the word fixes everything for you but it really doesn’t. I know that one for a fact, you have to reread what you type or write.

Mrs. Miller when I reread my post I found a few errors. I honestly can say after I typed it I did not proofread it. I now see why proofreading is so important because I found that my post did not make any sense. Now I know to go back reread and maybe even have someone else read it over.

If a business person didn’t proofread their work I think it would be a huge thing. If they didn’t proofread then it could cause some problems for customers and employers. If they miss spelled a word and put a different word an employer might get confused or do something else because that’s what they read it as. A customer could also have a really hard time if they needed help on something and they couldn’t understand anything because of mistakes. Some things that could help you proofread are just get in the habit of reading over everything you do so you can catch any mistakes if there are some. Also if you have the spell check I think that that could help you a lot if you’re a bad speller. Another thing would be that if you text a lot instead of using letters or numbers to make a word shorter just type out the full thing so you won’t miss spell it on anything else.

I think an employer or customer would think that you’re kind of a “get it done quickly” kind of person. And usually that is the case, because if you do not proofread your work, it would seem sloppy. If you were to apply for a job or fill out a college application and you did not proofread your resume, your employer or college would believe that you are not fit for the job. I find proofreading very boring and time consuming for me because when I proofread, I tend to take a long time to make sure everything is perfect on my own work and that takes a while. I think to make it an easier task, I should probably ask another student or teacher to proofread it for me. If you turn in a half done assignment with terrible grammar and bad handwriting, what kind of impression do you give off to your teacher? And after every DQ I do, my mom proofreads it for me. (By the way Mrs. Miller, did you spell employer wrong on purpose to see if we would catch it?)

Great catch Ireland- you have earned the extra credit for this week. Also thank you for being one of the first students to add the "have someone else read" point. That is something that is often forgotten. Glad to hear that mom reads your DQ for you - that is a great way to ensure that you are giving your best work. Only question - is it bad to be a "get it done quickly" person, or is it the "get it done quickly without quality" what makes that bad?

I think that the employer would think poorly of a person that does not proof read their work. If they don’t proof read their work it could have a lot of mistakes and their thoughts could be wrong. Some tips for proof reading are reading it out loud, read it backwards to check spelling of words, have others read it, and read it slowly.

Adam you are to provide an inital response of 150 words or more. I want you to show some thought in your response and not just "follow the leader" response. For your response to be given full credit give more detail in your answers. Now you response question - how do you spell proof read?

The employer would think that the person was not educated or does not care. They probably would not hire the person. The customer would think that the business does not take their work seriously and would not want to buy things from them.

I think that an employer or customer would think that someone who doesn’t proofread their work is lazy and doesn’t care about what they read or how other people are reading it. Some tips to help make proof reading and editing your work easier are, you could proof read while you are writing your paper. Like if you where writing an essay and you had to have five paragraphs. Instead of writing the whole essay and then proof reading it, after each paragraph go back and fix your mistakes. You can also have someone else proofread it to make sure you didn’t miss any mistakes.

I think that if a employer didn't proofread his or hers work the customer would thank about hiring them or not. I think if workers wanted it to be a better business they would take the time to read again before giving anything to the customer.

Tyler - did you re-read your own statement before hitting submit? If so re-read now and tell me 2 items that you found you made a mistake on. Not finding any use the suggestions that others have provided and have someone read to help you find your errors. In the response to this tell me the errors you found.

If I were the employer or customer and reading something were the person who wrote it didn’t proofread his or her work, I would think they are lazy. I think that because if the person won’t take the time to re-read something they had typed or have written, then they may not do the work he or she is given. Some tips that I have are to just take the time to check your work, have another person check it to be sure that you didn’t accidentally read over a mistake. To make editing work easier, you could have somebody else read it, as I said before, it makes it a lot easier to have more than one person read something so that all errors get corrected in case the first missed something small.
Mrs. Miller
11/12/2012 11:50:12 am
Cecilia you are correct that someone else will often times find the errors that were missed, but why is it that we can read something more than once and not see our own errors? Also do you think that if you are alone and no one is around a way we could find those errors ourself?

I believe that a business that sees an applicant who doesn’t proofread their work gives the employer a bad image of the person. This makes it so that the employer would not like to employ the applicant. I believe a business would think that the applicant is unintelligible and doesn’t know how to do a good job at their work. If I was a business person then that is what I would conclude of the person. Some tips for a person on proof reading is to review it looking for spelling or grammar errors. If you don’t know how to spell something then checks. After you do those have someone else check or do it on the computer. A computer picks up a lot of mistakes that a lot of people will not pick up. Also having a good application for people to review will judge you by that application. That is the purpose of it. When you review it and it has no errors and is neat and presentable that tends to give a good impression you. Have an English teacher review it because they know what an application should look like and what to look for. Make sure also that your work is understandable.

I think an employer or a customer would think that someone who didn’t proofread their work didn’t care because; if they didn’t take the time to double check obviously they think they have something better to do with their time. I also think the employer or customer would think that the worker didn’t do well enough to keep their job and that they may need to be fired because, they won’t ever have a good enough work ethic to care enough about what they need to do to get the job done correctly. I would think the employer who didn’t proofread didn’t want to be a part of the company because, they didn’t care enough just to proofread their work.
Zoe

Toni I think it is a fantastic idea to have an English teacher check it I would never have thought of anything like that and you thought of it. I think that an English teacher sense it is their field to teach the communication of English would know how to double check English written message that is communicated in English. I also love how you used the word applicant instead of worker because; they can easily get the privilege of working taken away.

Zoe when you post a comment to another student you need to do a reply to their post so that it places under their original post. In this post you write English four different times is that redundant and does it take away from your message?

Not proofreading work in school or in the business world is never a good thing. If you hand an employer a résumé that has not been proofread and there are errors, it is a bad reflection of you. Likewise if you send a letter to a customer that has mistakes, it would be a bad reflection on you and the company that you work for. Something that I do is I will take a break from my work and do something else, then come back and reread my work. When you put something to the side for a while then come back to it, you start caching your mistakes. Also when you have some one else check your work they catch the mistakes you made.
Mrs. Miller

Austin you have a great point that a customer doesn't get an impression of you they get an impression of the business. So if I was buying something from you today what is the impression you have left? Is there something in your post that needs to be corrected? Did you take a break as suggested before you submitted?

Proofreading your work is very important when doing just about anything, especially when you are filling out something such as a job application. A business employer would probably think that a person who doesn’t proofread their work is unprofessional, lazy, and that they don’t care about the quality of the work that they’re going to do for the company that is looking to hire them. Even if you are posting something on facebook for example, you should still probably proofread your work. If you do so, you will sound more intelligent and like you actually care. People judge all the time and nothing stops somebody from judging your spelling, capitalization, and grammar. Some tips to make proofreading easier would be to first off learn how to properly spell, capitalize, and use proper grammar. Another great way to do so is a way that Mrs. Miller taught us, by typing what you want to say on Microsoft Word, and then copying and pasting your work. Be careful though, Microsoft Word will only recognize misspelled words, for example if you are trying to spell “from” and accidentally type “form”; Microsoft word will recognize both of those words as correctly spelled words because they both are.
